~music selections for the week~
~
march 1-15 ~
slowdive - just for a day
~
like a sea of meloncholy beauty, I have been finding myself drowning in slowdive's hauntingly gorgeous sounds lately.
it's really strange how i'm beginning to wonder what else i might have missed in the early 90's. whatever that might be, my atmosphere has expanded since michael let me burn "just
for a day".
anouar brahem trio - astrakan cafe
~
this is some great music - anouar is a tunisian oud genious.
figurine - the heartfelt
~
i never thought i'd be into catchy pop music, but i'm somehow drawn to the stylings of figurine. their songs are filled with all the
old cliches of love, breaking up, and living in a space station. but further inside lies a more complex essence to the songs. i like the mix of electronic sounds and conventional pop beats,
but more importantly i pick up a more sophisticated feeling beyond the standard pop sound. good stuff.
mum - yesterday was dramatic, today is o.k.
~
like iceland itself, there are strange but beautiful creatures lurking behind the mossy logs of the ancient forests. mum peers their head over
the mossiest of logs to reveal their otherworldy yet emotional ambient music. in the food world they would be a chantrel stuffed mochi pocket. very interesting, and surprisingly tasty.
air - talkie walkie
~
their first album was great, and they've been sort of just floating around since then. talkie walkie has them back on the saddle,
making some good music. not too complex, but not boring, it's a great album to relax with. they've captured certain emotions that are often left unnoticed in this world, and portray them
with the ease of musical ninjas.
cat power - you are free
~
this girl truly has it going on. like nothing before, her songs are like a shock and awe attack of wonder bombs. the moods she is able to
express grab you and turn you upside down. her voice chills and thrills at the same time. what super-human powers does she possess? why can't all music be this good?
